Welcome to the Unreal Hour. Hi there, and welcome to our show. I'm Fiona and I'm Emma. And we are here for a Cast of Ice and Fire episode twenty. Oh my goodness, yay, wow us and we are covering a night of the Seven Kingdoms. This is episode one, the Hedge Night, named after the novella that the show is based on. So let's just get straight in because this was absolutely great. What did you think? What do you think overall have recently read it. Well, one of the things I really liked about it is the difference from a lot of the other Westerner stories that we have had in the past. Definitely, So when I watched the first episode, I found myself paying attention to how that difference comes across on screen, like compared with George's writing. Yes, I quite like to dip into things like the casting. Oh definitely. Yes, the locations. Fabulous but good to be back in Belfast. The yes, the time period and how we meet the characters, and the dialogue. So these are kind of basically all those things that bring the story to life, isn't it. Absolutely so. It was directed by Owen Harris and written, of course by the fabulous Ira Parker, and I think it was fantastic. I think it was really, really, really well done. It's somebody that's been a fan of these books for a decade. I just it was everything I hoped it would be. I always, you know, in the back of your head, when you're still mid Game of Thrones and you've just read these being vellas for the first time, there's always this little hope in the back of your head that one day maybe these could be developed. I thought maybe short I thought maybe movies, But I actually like that they've done it as a TV show. Yeah, I mean it's a nice wee short stories. Six episodes. I think it's just the perfect length to get the full story. So what do you want to dig into? First? You had a wee list there? What was the Well, let's go for the opening scene because it was really great and I like the open with a burial. It sets a quieter, more grounded tone than we usually see in West of Us. Yeah. Yeah, immediately you have questions, you're what's going on here? What's going on? There's like it's nice. It's kind of small scale, personal, reflective rather than epic. Yeah, I love that look. I mean the opening line is I don't know the right words. It just sums dunk up in a nutshell, not knowing the right words. That's that. I don't know the right words. Ought to be a sept in here. You were true nice, You never beat me when I didn't deserve it. Let's set that time of maiden Pool because the en boy ate the way that woman's boy, not me. I told you, why are you? It doesn't matter now. M m. H I'd leave your sword for him. I will be roasted in the ground it was you didn't die, sir. H I'll take. Good care of the horses, and I just think that. But the whole scene really it sets you up for who this guy is. First of all, I don't know the right word. Secondly, the fact that there's no one there, it's just him and the horse horses. Yet he still felt the need to say something. You know, I don't know what to say, but I know I need to say something to mark this because you were important to me and you you were a great night, and you deserve a send off, and it just shows you's heart right from the word go. And so that's that was why I love most about the same. So I quite liked him talking to the horses. That's fabulous. I think it's a great way to get Dunk's thoughts off the page. Yeah, it's kind of shows is isolation in our thoughts. Yes, great way to get that inner monologue out totally. Yeah, it sort of shows is is kindness and slightly awkward nature. Yeah, and they're like and it's it's a rapport that I often felt like there was moments Sweetfoot's the right one, the white one, isn't it? Yes? Yeah, because the. Thunders. Yeah, so Sweetfoot. There's moments with Sweetfoot and he's talking and it's like sweetfoots shaking it. It's like they're having a conversation. And I love the way that's like, don't don't sort at me like that my face, he said, when we could go to King's Land in or Lanisport to the Lanists, no way. So yeah, really touching these scenes of the horses and the conversation and yeah, it's just a brilliant opening to a character, isn't it. Yeah. And then there was this epic moment where the Game of Thrones title music starts and I'm sitting there going and then it cuts to the tree scene. Okay, so there's an inside joke there, and it's like this show ships all over Game of Thrones. That is what they're trying to say, it is there is a dig there that is a very definite, subtle dig. I mean, at the same time, it's still HBO, it's still you know, still the same company. Speaking of which, did you notice that Ryan Condall was an executive producer. I did notice that. Yeah, forgot to look into that. Actually, like, what did Ryan do? I'd like to know. Well, maybe have some answers on that for next week. Actually, I'll have a wee look up. But yeah, I mean they are actively involved with the other shows. But it's it was a statement, it was, this is not Game of Thrones, this is not House to the Dragon. Yeah, this is not about kings and queens and castles and bloodlines, which is what we usually get in an intro. Yeah, a story about a simple man with a dodgy tummy. It fits his rough, unromantic reality, doesn't it. It really does. How unglorious his night situation is so Peter Claffy. Is it claff Claffy? I think Laffy. That's it. Peter Claffey was absolutely fantastic. The casting there, it is fantastic. It is fantastic. He us a former rugby union player. I did not know that, or did I? I don't know. Sometimes I know things and then I forget them. That's what we have the wine for. Yes, I don't know any more than that. No, I don't know much much about him, to be honest with you, but the casting was brilliant. I saw the first and I'd really seen him apart from in the still shots from like on set and things like that when they were filming. Was after the comicalm when they released the trailer and I saw the panel with him, Dexter, Ira, and George, and I was just instantly drawn. He's just such a great guy and him and Dexter have this amazing chemistry going on. They're just it's it's I love the banter between them and immediately just warmed him instantly. But I'm interested for you. Are they how you imagined them in your head? They are for me, but I'd already them, so I wonder if that's skewing my perspective. I mean, yeah, I mean like I mean without getting it down to exact facial details. But yeah, he is how I expected. I'm an app with one thousand percent for Dexter. He he just nailed Egg. I think George said he just jumped straight off the page, and that was a compliment he'd given Dexter himself. I thought, oh, that's lovely, because he really did. He was absolutely embodied Egg for me, And yeah, the peer was was absolutely how I imagine Sir Dunk minus the detail, if you know what I mean. I like that, like he so he's not as tall as Dunk. Dunk supposed to been near seven foot, he's not quite as tall. I think he's six'. Six SO i wondered what they were going to, do like if they how they're going to maybe play with camera angles and stuff like that to Make dunk seem like he towers. Above but, YEAH i think they just went for short. Actors to be honest with you more on that, LETTER i think this is the thing as. Well he Like, dunk thinks that he's, inconspicuous right because he's no one really and he thinks he's, inconspicuous but because he towers above, everybody people notice. Them so then people speak to, him and this is how he finds himself in these situations where, he's you, know hanging out with the cool. Kids asking him silly. QUESTIONS i know we'll get to that. Definitely So, yeah absolutely Loved peter and As, DUNK i think he's nailed the character. Completely he's just so authentic and he's sweet and kind and a bit, thick but he's smart in his own way as, well as we will learn going. Forward he has his own kind of smarts. But gets his. Integrity, yes, yes it. Is he has a strong moral code and he's very true to. You he totally embodies what it means to be a, night what he has been taught being a night, means and tries to live up to. That so, yeah he's a great character and one of my favorites out of this, world to be honest with. You and you, know if it's any of, you is That i've actually That i've listened to Our house of The dragon, podcast you'll know that am hashtags team Small folk, Anyway so here we. Go this is truly a tale for the small. Folk so what else have you got there. In your the filming? Locations, well, yes back In, belfast, absolutely and it absolutely feels like we're right smack in the middle of West, ross because that's we've come to associate those landscapes with West. ROSS i watch The Big game Of thrones binge On skytland and the lead up to A night of The Seven. KINGDOMS i think it was on for about nine. HOURS i started about eight o'clockish or. SOMETHING i made it to about one o'clock in the morning AND i was, like, no, on he got my. Bed NOW i have a. Fever i'm absolutely. SHATTERED i can't do it. Anymore but there were some great. Scenes this was sort of end of season five into the beginning of season, six which IS i was shouting at THE tv a. Lot i'm not going to lie now That i've like refreshed myself and a lot of this story compared to WHEN i saw season, six AND i was picking holes, everywhere but still enjoying lots of it. Too and, yeah there was a lot Of belfast scenery in. There so the second we get into A night of The Seven, kingdoms it just felt. Right so what notes have you got about the scenery? There so it was more that the opening scene is a. Mountain oh you went into. DETAIL i did BECAUSE i do love a. Location The Ashford Medal tourney was filmed on the grounds of glen Arm castle And County. ANDRUM i did know that BECAUSE i watched them behind the. SCENES i didn't have time to watch, that But i'll get to. That very, good very very good behind the. SCENES i thoroughly enjoyed. THAT i was Quite it got me all hyped up again AND i just watched the episode and Then i'm watching this behind the scenes And i'm, like, Oh i'm getting all those rushes, AGAIN i want to talk about that and talk about. That, NO i can't remember any of. It so they Used Myra. Castle i'm not sure what for you because THAT i don't think we've seen that in this, episode and they Used Titanic. STUDIOS i did read an article about how happy there's been some extras that were used On game Of thrones that have come back because they're, locals, yes and they're just so tough to be a part of. That so that's one of the things they mentioned in the making of. THAT a lot of their crew as well were people that worked On game Of thrones and it felt they said that it felt right to come back there because these people already understand the. World so to have the Old game Of thrones crew working on, it oh that's really. Nice, yeah, definitely and. Extras of, course if you've ever seen there's A wee documentary we behind The scenes documentary that came out at the same time as like the season eight, finale and it showed you some behind the scenes staff of filming and. Everything it was a week OF i don't know if it was a two parter or, something but there was this one Particular irish extra that they followed through this documentary quite a. Lot he was really really. Cool you should absolutely WISH i could remember the name of. THAT i might drop this drop in the name of it and while it made it And i'll look it up And i'll drop it in the The. Yeah that would be. Awesome this Is fiora and post. Production that documentary was Called game Of Thrones the last. Watch check it, Out. So, yeah worth a, watch worth of watching. It say the hard work that these extras. DO i think it was a stark but. Yeah worth a watch. Anyway so what have you got on the time? Period so the. Time PERIOD i actually did the. Math this is your real, house this is my. Realize so this is this whole hundred years Before game Of. Thrones thing is so confusing because it's not it's like they're saying it's right in the. Middle it's not. Quite it's about we're talking eight eighty years After house of The dragon and we're talking ninety years Before game Of thrones Because game Of thrones. STARTS i think it's like around two ninety eight something like. THAT i know that a couple of books into the story when it's three hundred ac egg is born in two hundred, acy so therefore eggs about ten by this, point we would, Say so it's going to be two, Ten so that makes it ninety years Before game Of. Thrones and Also Master raymond is one hundred years old In game Of, thrones and he's older Than. Egg, yes so it has to be you, know like one hundred minus however old. They, are, yeah at this. Point so, yeah we're talking just maybe eighty, nine ninety years Before. Throwing so what we're going to find as this story progresses is if we definitely when the time we get to season, three for, sure we will be starting to meet some young characters who are old In game Of, thrones, Right. Okay and it's interesting to see what's going to happen as this progresses because we now know That george is Handied eyra outlines for a dozen more, stories AND i believe That george always wanted to take this right through their. Lives SO i, think as much as either, FABULOUS i, think don't get too attached to Particularly, dexter because in a couple of years, time he may be. Recast, Right, Okay he's eleven at the, moment SO i suppose it will depend on HOW. I think they're okay at the moment because they waited so long to release. It so he was nine when he filmed, it and he's eleven, now and he's supposed to be two years older in the next, book so that if they film this year spot on the next, one they'll probably get away within. That and that's All george. Rot so what is supposed to be next is the She wolves of Winter. FELL i think is supposed to be the next. Story so we're going to get to go back To winterfell if we make it to season. Four, WELL i, mean depending on his. GENETICS i know that when my son got to, sixteen he just grew like a weed into a. Man never, Know. Well speaking of, genetics we know it is as good as confirmed that there are descendants Of dunk In game Of. Thrones oh, right number, One, Brian, BRIAN. I knew you were going to say. That, yeah and there's a lot of, parallels by the, way With brian And podrick And Duncan. Egg. Yeah, right that's. Deliberate but there's a thing In game of there's a moment In game Of, thrones so You briand's lost her shield and she gets a new, shield and she decides to have it. Painted is this because she has to leave all her shit When catlin's, like but we need it Go it might be Because i'm not LIKE i think that was. Yesterday renally the shadow, Comes renley's like ha, ha. And then very will. Be then then they come. In they're fighting With. Brian he's, dying and Then catlin's, like whoa wasn't he HOW i was a? Mad shadow, like you're fucking up a good lady start and then they're like she's they go, await and she's, like get your. Ship we're fucking. Going, yeah BUT i need my sword and my armor and. Everything fuck, it you didn't he need. It you're going to get the. Blame read this, recently like, so, Yeah i'm going to take your word on, That and it sounds, plausible but that is when. It so then later on she goes to get a new shield, painted and she gets it painted based on one that she sees in her in her father's. Armory, okay so this is your clue that there's a connection Between dunk because the shield Is dunk, shield not the one who's carrying about at the moment the paint From, yes so, yeah The. Dunk obviously That's Sir arland's sidgel that is on that. Shield dunk has to get a new sigel and he designs his. Own we'll leave that to happen on screen. Freezing but later On brianne has the same shield based on a memory of a shield that is in her father's. Armory so there's one of your, clues and then there's The bryanna and pod staff and. Everything but this has been as good as confirmed By george without actually Saying brian is dunksan. Senate stop calling Her. BRIAN i might have a fucking heart, Attack, george know what's he? Fell, really, yeah but when she's young obviously not not in, that not in this episode or like the first. Book, no not in the book. Four that doesn't exist, yet right, Right but it's heavily hinted That dunk is a. Descendant sorry that Hold door And brian are both descendants Of. Line so and the other, ones which are more loose and evidence for is The mountain and The. Hound that's more fan they than it is heavily. Hinted that's just because they're. Tall. Mhmm you're just picking tall. Characters. Now the hound is. Supposed to be very, tall but the mountain is supposed to be a seven foot, giant much Like Sir. Duncan SO i would they like The mountain to be his, descendant to be fair a bad, man and the hound's only slightly. Better actually that he's a lot, better but he's still, bad you, know in the, mountains just exceptionally. BAD i know WHERE i am in the Book Took. Winterfell, oh, oh you're at the. This and there's a very great scene In clash where The Lord Commander Jor mormon is explaining To john's Master raymond's lineage and he goes through maybe a couple of generations from from his, Granddad King dron who is who is king at the man During Duncan egg and his his children and then their children to get to Aim on and, yeah you could just tell that this is Where george was really planning this all. Out, so, yeah there's a there's a strong. Connection george's head was in the same place when he was writing Both clash And Duncan egg Or The Hedge night, originally BUT i think The blackfire stuff THAT i think that maybe came. EGGS i thought that was a great. Line doug really thought about it, there and then we have the creepy drunk in the. Corner he is not happy to have done anywhere near. Him he, SAID i saw you in a, dream and whatever he saw in that dream he did not, like and he Saw dunk as a. Threat so this is straight out the. Book but WHAT i felt from the actor in the scene in comparison To Harry lloyd playing him in the book IS i Think harry did a lot more sort of mope and, pathetic and he came across as angry and quite. Threatening you, know like when you have a party and there's like that one guy in the corner that you're just everybody's side eye because they think they might kick. Off that's the VIBE i was getting. Wrong BUT i didn't get that From. Harry From, HARRY i got, MOPy, sad. Drunk, so, yeah it was a different take on a Character i've. Seen but you're right because he in the book he had sort of wine stains down in front of him and was a bit pathetic and. Dribbling, yeah and he's very MOPy his. Voice, yeah it's just one of the many fantastic voices Of Harry. LLOYD i can't plug the audiobook. Enough, guys listen if you, haven't it's it's so. Brilliant from, there so he meets The egg obviously in the way and thinking he's mistaken him for a for a stable. Boy but we then learn and the next, scene WHICH i have a clip, off that he's GOING i had to do with the innkeeper is he's an. Orphan he's an. Orphan, indeed let's hear the. Clip oh my, LORD. I did not mean to offend. You take that armor off. You i'd be glad thunder and take you in that full ahead of yours as well as. You what was your insolent? Mouth i'm a Nice i'll have you know. What our knights look the same they, now they don't. Look like your, Belts. Ripe that's. Brilliant oh, no it's such a cute. Scene Re, dexter just put someone in his place or? Egg SHOULD i? Say you can feel that he's clocking more Than dunk, realizes and there's a real sorry sharpness to his wit without being. Cheekyll he is being, cheeky but he's very. Sharp he's, cheeky. But he's always right. Too well, yeah AND i think that's what Disarms dunk every. Day precocious would be a better. Word, yeah, yeah for, sure but he. Is it's it's such a great way scene like that that moment And dunk throws him the coin and then he's got and he's, like, Yes i'll call you. WANT i know you'll pick it up When i'm. Gone he doesn't, know he's not, interested. And they're, like what is going on with this? BOY i love this wee moment between, them and you can see That thunks like he's just channeling everything that he knows From Sir arlen and the way he treated, it and he is, like you, know give you a. Clout it's LIKE i was always constantly threatening to give egg a, cloud to be honest with you as the book's go, on but he never. DOES i don't think. He actually pulled on his heart strings inadvertently by saying my mother's. Dead, yeah so you're an. Orphan, yeah and. Then he's, like, oh you're just like, me and then he relates to Him. Oh for, Sure, yeah definitely that that was the moment like oh you're an. Orphan it suddenly wasn't so mean. Anymore but, yeah he leaves them behind, anyway and then they pull on his art strings too. Much at that, point AND i have to not give him a. Clout, yeah, exactly considering he was on his horse and then all his. Armor, yeah he probably deserved. One so, yeah Dun dunk makes his way along to the to the tourney and goes to register for the. LEFT i like that scene where he's riding, in and it felt quietly intimidating rather than. Epic you, know when we normally see castles And game Of thrones And house in. The dragon magnificence it in, awe. But it's really From dunk's, perspective which, is, yeah like quite. Intimidating, yeah so THAT i thought was really. Cool and there's no epic music or anything fan, like no aerial shots like we usually. Get there's just a sense OF i hope this goes as. Well, yeah. Definitely oh my, god, BOY i think you're in over your. Head SO i love that he it goes when he goes in to See plumber and then the first thing that happens is he cracks his head. Off that looks so. Funny it's just, like oh my, god the world was just not built for, you was just a big clumsy. O it does humanize, him it really. Does it. Does BUT i love the Way plumber winds him. Up so let's hear that Because i've got that clip. Too it's fab. And you can make a. Match it's. True witnesses only a robin and the thorn. Tree that's not what the? So Penny tree is a small village that is on the border of bracken and blackwood land between two hills called the, teats, right and these teats were passed back and forward between blackwoods and. Brackens sorry about. Right so the teats were passed back and forward between blackwoods and brackens during eggon the egg on them worthies. Time he was obviously passing them off for. Favors that's why he has both bracken and blackwood. Children but he IF i remember, RIGHTLY i think It's Barbara bracken and at that point they were Called barbara's, teats and then when they were over the, blackwoods they were someone else's, teats and the names keep. Changing but, anyway this poor little village of Penny tree is right in the middle this very disputed. Land i'm, unfortunate and this is Where Sir island's. From but the cool thing about is they have this tree which people mail pennies. TO i think it's for. Wishes oh, Nice. So, yeah that's what the pennies. Signifies that's a really cute me. Story But, god those brackens and blackwoods, again like the feud that never those, guys it wouldn't be A western rof story without some brackens and. Blackwoods, actually that's another point that he makes as. WELL i kind of love that he's, like come, on this is the, reach not the. Riverlands, Yeah and it's funny, because like if you it's quite true in the real world as. Well you, know as a scot we know, this but that the further north you, go like people deem it more. Uncivilized so if you're in the, reach the the river, lands is the uncivilized be there that they're a bit barbarians up, There but then in the river lands The northerners are. Barbarians and then when you get to the, north it's the wildlines the. Barbarians and it's quite like that in real life as, well you Know, England, scotland and then if you think about even going back To roman, times the barbarians were coming from the. North, yeah, yeah it's always you, know further north you, go the less civilized they. Get it's because. We've got to deal with the. Cold george did his, Research he certainly. Did he always, does he always. Does BUT i love it at that moment as, well when dunk is telling the story of when he was knighted To. Plumber i'm just Like, TYM i. Dunk, yeah you really really doesn't need to know all the details of how your knighting went. Down and that's one of the things in the book as. Well and it's not it's not a spoiler to say this because it's just completely, unconfirmed but you. Are you're always left wondering if he really was, Knighted, yeah Sir. Arlyn AND i think that's definitely coming across in the show as, well because he's over, explaining just like later on with the. With the Foss, aways what do you think this is? Mine by? Rights this? SWORD i don't think he. WAS i don't think he. WAS i don't think he was. KNIGHTED i think he's. He had an. IDEA i think when the sword was in his hand and he said. That threat's music was starting and it. Fits my hand as well as it. Did is the horses are, like, well, okay. So, NO i don't think he's a real night but we love him, anyway we. Do we. Do we back him his. Lie but and that was the other see it loved as. Well he always meant me to be a. Knight and then you get the first he just says. NOTHING i actually totally forgot about the slap. Montage all the slap montage was absolutely. Brilliant he never beat me UNLESS i deserved. It and then there's the other except that one, time AND i never did deserve it except that one. Time and then it's the key's on the slap and then his heap bounds off the. Beam, yeah it's, like, oh that's that's. Sah and you see the. Wee boy who did it running off and then BLESSED i, mean bangs his head on the way, out isn't he. Of course he. Does, yeah that's WHAT i was loving during that clip as. Well and he's like did you did someone put you in the? Head and did you get in the head of the? Boot like no a door? Frame, yeah so. Good so AND i love that he goes as he hits his head on the way, out and he goes to go seven fucking, hells but it just cuts off at. This, yeah it's, like you know the rest of that. SENTENCE i love that he's just it's just been a really sort of rousing moment for him and he's, like what was? It he says just before he bangs his. Head he's, LIKE i don't need, OH i. Down but lovely little scene that they had there as, well that came up in the in the making of where they were like wanted somewhere that obviously had a river and a place that they could set at the, journey but also a castle in the, background and they're, like how are we going to get all these the? Things and then eventually found this brilliant little, place and what a beautiful little scene When dunk comes around the corner and he sees that little tree that he's going to be sleeping under and he's, like, oh this is. Home. Yeah it was very very. Cute so love. That then of course she heads back in to the tourney and he gets the puppet. Show that Was that was not WHAT i was expecting. From the puppet. Show, YEAH i expected something smaller, scale certainly from the book. PERSPECTIVE i MEAN i wasn't surprised at the time we watched it because we've seen the trailer so many. TIMES i knew what was. Coming but, yeah WHEN i first saw this in the, TRAILER i was taken aback because they were Like marionnes in the. Book, Yeah SO i, like, well if we can't give you some cgi, dragons we're going to give you a badass puppet. Dragon, yeah full, on like like sticks holding up these. GUYS i know the crew In, black you know pantomimes in the eighties that were like, yeah. Absolutely but The Puppet show was fantastic And tansell had absolute amazing presence. Story so obviously what we know from the trailer now is that anyone that didn't hasn't seen the trailer and doesn't want to know tune out, now but has laid out in the, trailer is that obviously the targetarians Arrive dunk defending the honor of a beautiful, maid but she's one in the face and gets dragged into a trial by. Combat so. It will be interesting to see how this is. Depicted but just from WHAT i saw on the trailer, ALONE i feel like they're hitting all the beats THAT i want them to. Years SO i really feel that what we're getting now is a true adaptation this, time AND i think anything extra that has been added in only compliments the, story like these. Flashbacks there was some scenes in that the, beginning particularly off the, trailer that showed what looked like a Young dunk on a, battlefield which could really only be The Blackfire. Rebellion it might not have been Young, dunk it might be it might Be baylor And, maker Because baylor And maker were quite prominent figures in, fact changed the tide of battle in The Black fact the First Blackfire, Rebellion so we might be it might be their, flashbacks BUT i felt it Was dunk BECAUSE i think it was the same little boy that we saw that there was a girl talking at the very beginning of the. Challenge she was definitely called Them, Dunk SO i think this Was. Dunk, no this is not anything that we got in the books That dunk was kicking around the battlefield after The Blackfire, rebellion because it looked like it was after the. Battle it's not something that this might be just something extra that they've decided that add in to Give dunk a little bit more of a connection to this. History. Yeah, maybe and if that is what they're, DOING i do not. OBJECT i think it's pretty. Cool. Actually. Yeah so, yeah really looking forward to see what's to. COME i think the adding in these little, bits these flashbacks and things like, that it's just expands that story just a little bit more because it's very hard to do a show through the perspective of one. Person so flashbacks were a really great way of giving us the inner, monologue as we said at the.
